It's a green Christmas!

It's not Christmas yet, is it? It seems to be starting here! Our first poinsettias arrived mid July. We plant approximately twelve thousand in various sizes and colors. Traditional red, classic white, jolly Jingle Bells, Christmas Rose and beautiful burgandy are just a few. Usually beginning in October we begin to see some colour on the poinsettia leaves due to the shorter days and "longer" nights.(We can't leave any lights on or it can affect the bloom time.) By late November, most are in full colour. We do a fundraising program that has been very successful for schools, Kinette groups, sports clubs, etc. If you would like more info on this, you can check out our website www.huronridge.ca and click on fundraising. I will keep you updated on these gorgeous plants.

Good planting weather for perennials

A perennial is a plant that will over-winter here and return to lift it's head out of the soil as the spring rains warm the ground. Here are some pictures of some beautiful, classic perennials. Perennials are like someone bringing you a bouquet of flowers. If you plan your garden right, you can receive a different gift every week. I love walking out to my gardens and finding a new flower has opened and is flowering happily. With the moisture this year, anytime is a good time to plant. The plants can have time to get rooted in nicely before cool weather sets in. Plant a perennial today!

The results are in!

Thank you to those of you who cast your vote. I was interested to see what flowers you found hardy in the hot summer sun. Petunias were tops, then portulaca, with geraniums and ornamental grasses tying for third. Thanks again and enjoy those flowers!

My apologies

I must apologize for the scarceness of my blogs. Being summertime, I have been able to cut back my work hours in order to be home with my kids more which has been wonderful. (most days..) Normally I would just post a blog at home but our personal computer locked up in June and we haven't been able to revive it so have been without one for some time. We all went through withdrawal for a week or so and then it was ok. So here I am now with a new computer, ready to roll but....we are heading out today for a few days holidays so I will once again postpone writing an informative blog. I promise when I get home, I will write again. A quick tip for today though is about hostas. If your hostas look like the leaves are all chewed up, they have likely been invaded by slugs. The wet weather doesn't help the situation. You will need to sprinkle some slug and snail bait around the base of your hostas to help protect them. I should be doing this myself as my one hosta is looking very poorly. So I bid you good-bye for now! Get out there and enjoy the beautiful day and your gardens!
